Was shooting today in a grade eight classroom. These students are middle class in Malawi, in one of the largest cities. Each student had a desk, and the room had glass in the windows which I haven't seen in Malawi before.
I shot a fair number of images with the Sony Zeiss 24mm on the NEX7 but it was a bit wide. Once I switched to the Sony E-mount 50mm f1.8 I realized what a great little lens this is.
All the press and buzz has been around the Zeiss 24mm. There have been a couple discussions about the 55-210 and a few about the new 50mm. I think the 50mm is one lens most NEX photographers would appreciate.
The kit lens is fine, but it's too slow for low light work, the Sony Zeiss is wonderful but it's high priced and not everyone will go that route. The 50mm should be very reasonable in price and the faster speed lets you take photos that the kit lens just couldn't get.
All these were done at ISO800 on the NEX7. Mostly wide open in a dark classroom handheld.

Beautiful lighting and DOF Rob. Besides photography, the photos themselves are a real essay. Thanks, Dave
ReplyDeleteLovely shots Rob.
ReplyDeleteAgree with your evaluation - at the price point that lens should be at, it looks like a keeper indeed.
Very nice.. I personally would rather have the 50mm length than 24mm for my style anyway, and the price is very attractive.
ReplyDeleteThank you Rob !! Pictures look really nice !
ReplyDeleteCould yo tell us more about your feelings with the nex-7 ?
Do you think the 24 Mp is a good choice ?
do you have more pictures with the Zeiss 24 mm 1.8 ?
thanks a lot
Great pics, thanks for posting !
ReplyDeleteWhat about AF speed ? Is it the same as the kit lens or faster ?
I didn't notice as much hunting with the prime lens but to be honest I haven't used the kit lens very much. When I first received the NEX it was with the 16mm instead of the kit lens.
ReplyDeleteNice lens for going to the zoo it seems :D
ReplyDeleteIgnorant.
DeleteHow can someone have enough intelligence to be interested in photography yet still be a racist simpleton?

ReplyDeleteGreat, ih hope the lens will come to germany till x-mas. My Nex 5N becomes with this lens a reportage camera. Great and thx for the pics
ReplyDeleteThat third shot down is just really, really great. Excellent work Rob!
ReplyDeletenex-7 and the lenses are not yet at the market
ReplyDeletehow did you got them sir?
I test cameras for them.
ReplyDeleteSecond photo from below is amazing.
ReplyDeleteMost review sites states that as far as image quality the 5N is better then the 7. Also the photos of the 5N looks better when both of them with the kit lenses.
Movies are sharper on 7N.
What is your final conclusion as far as IQ please.
I was set on getting the 24mm 1,8 but after seeing your photos, I am considering getting the 50mm instead. Heck, I may even get both for my Nex-5N.
ReplyDelete(Not for publication) Rob, I linked to this post from The Online Photographer this morning ("Ivan," in the Comments to today's post), and I noticed that your link to the post page open the BOTTOM of the page (end of the comments and the comment submission box) rather than the top of the page. Just didn't know if you were aware of this and thought you might want to fix it. All best, Mike J.
ReplyDeleteIn April, I am going to be visiting schools in South Africa where kids from the townships are educated. Many of my shots will be duplicates of your shots so I am very happy to see gorgeous shots you achieved with just 800 ISO. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the SEL5018. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDeletewow! nice capture! i just wish that the SEL50mm will be available here in Singapore SOON! it's out of stock everywhere!
