Sony NEX7 with Zeiss F-mount 35mm ZF.2

This is a weird combination but I wanted to give it a try.

The Zeiss ZF.2 35mm f1.4 on the NEX7.

The lens is bigger and heavier than the camera... cost more too.

I thought I would try the Sony NEX7 with every lens I had.

I'm not drawing any conclusions, just posting the images for you to enjoy.

The camera was the latest pre-production version which I just picked up this week.

The ISO was set to 100.

Camera on a man's size tripod.

Self-timer so I didn't jerk anything.

Everything was done on manual focus... used the scene enlarger to focus the best I could.

Aperture priority.

AWB.

This is the Zeiss Nikon-mount 35mm ZM at f1.4. Shutter was maxed out at 1/4000.

This is the Zeiss Nikon-mount 35mm ZM at f4.

This is the Zeiss Nikon-mount 35mm ZM at f8.

  2. Thanks for posting this series! So it looks like the Nikon mount may suffer from reduced vignetting compared to the ZM glass at a comparable focal length - would you expect that to be the case carried over to other lenses in the Nikon mount?

Certainly the longer ZM glass looked great / not too troubled by light fall off.

  3. It's so hard to tell. The Nikon mount 35mm f1.4 is Zeiss' latest design and is made for cameras with much larger sensors than are currently available. Although the other lenses aren't that old in design, a lot has changed in the last three years and the latest design shows the proof.

Of course the lens is huge which defeats the whole purpose of the system. LOL.

  4. Thanks for taking the time to run through these tests.

One observation so far... White Balance... It seems to be warm at f4 and wider, and notably colder at f8. Looks very much like the difference between "shade" and "daylight" settings in camera when you show the two photos side by side.

I noticed this for a few of the lenses tested, not just this Zeiss... Anyone else seeing this? Nex7 pre-production firmware issue maybe?
